In a proceeding for dissolution of marriage, the court may grant alimony to either party. Alimony may be bridge-the-gap, rehabilitative, durational, or permanent in nature or any combination of these forms. Alimony does not only depend on a party’s need for alimony, but it also depends on the other spouse’s ability to pay for the alimony. When determining whether alimony will be paid, there are many factors to consider, including the length of the marriage, how long the alimony will be paid , and the amount of the alimony.
